Judging by my watch collection I think it’s pretty safe to say that I’m not huge a watch guy.
At least not in the sense that I get geeked out over them and have a massive collection of expensive or rare timepieces.
That’s just not me.
But I like watches. I really do. And I think it’s a good idea for every guy to wear one regardless if he is into watches or not.
Watches are a great way to level up your style or round out an otherwise great outfit.
Unfortunately, watches have become increasingly rare in a world dominated by cell phones. Most guys figure wearing a watch is overkill if you’re already carrying a smartphone.
The following are 4 reasons why every guy should wear a watch (even if he’s carrying a cell phone).
Modern smartphones are an incredible technology but the last thing I’d consider them to be is discreet. Especially compared to a watch.
I find it looks silly when you ask someone for the time that they reach into their pocket and whip out a small computer.
There’s just something very unsophisticated about the whole process.
Now compare that to asking for the time from someone who is wearing a watch. All they have to do is casually glance down at their wrist.
And that’s what I love about watches. They are simple and discreet. Totally uncomplicated.
In a world where we are constantly glued to our cell phones, I find watches to be a welcomed reprieve. If anything, they give you one less reason to reach for your phone, something that we do hundreds of times per day.
When it comes to style, class, and sophistication a quality timepiece beats a cell phone every single time. Even the latest smartphones with their sleek design and space age technology can’t hold a candle next to something like this:
That’s an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean watch for those of you wondering. And yeah, it’s expensive. It’s actually one of the watches worn by Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace.
I know what some of you are thinking, “Dude, I can’t afford a $4000 watch! Are you nuts?”
The great thing about watches these days is that you don’t need to ball out and drop several grand in order to score a beautiful looking watch. Even budget pieces from companies like MVMT can look great. For example, I own this this rose gold and brown leather strap number:
If you’re looking for an easy way to bump up your aesthetic, I can’t recommend wearing a quality watch enough. You’ll look like a grown up too.
Another great thing about watches is that they allow you to express your individuality. With so many different styles available it’s not hard to find a timepiece that is both unique and suits your tastes.
Cell phones, on the other hand, are pretty much all the same. These days most people either own an iPhone or an Android (and to a lesser extent, a BlackBerry). The best you can do under these circumstances is to choose a unique case. Seriously. That’s basically about as far as you can go with expressing your individuality with a phone.
With watches there is a lot more variety and it’s completely acceptable to have more than one watch in your rotation (dress watch vs casual watch vs sports watch).
One of my favourite ways to express individuality with a watch is by swapping out different straps. Take for example the Timex Weekender:
By all accounts this is a pretty nondescript looking watch. It’s neither ugly nor eye catching. But if you were to swap out that cheap nylon band for a quality leather one (in this case from form function form) you would have a completely new (and unique) watch that is bound to turn some heads:
Now imagine if you had a handful of classy bands and a few different watch faces. You could literally create dozens of different styles for any occasion or outfit. You simply cannot do this with your cell phone.
It’s one thing to own the latest and greatest smartphone, but it’s an entirely different thing to own a luxury watch (Rolex, Breitling, Omega etc.).
Like it or not but the right watch can and will elevate your status in ways that a cell phone simply cannot do.
What makes luxury watches so great at conferring status is that so few people are playing that game.
For instance, when a new smartphone comes out pretty much everyone upgrades right away. It’s just something people do without really thinking about.
But how many people are willing to drop $10k on a timepiece? Not many.
And that’s the difference.
When it comes to ramping up your style, luxury watches are absolutely next level.
Does that mean you should go out and drop $10k on a watch? Not at all. Not every guy needs or wants to spend that kind of money on a timepiece and that’s perfectly fine. What’s important to recognize, however, is the power of luxury watches as a way of signaling your status and success. It’s a powerful psychological effect and something you can tap into if you want.
You don’t have to be a watch aficionado in order to benefit from wearing one. Watches are a great accessory that can absolutely elevate your style, even if you still carry a smartphone.
Here’s to looking sharp!
