Of all the different topics I have covered at Well Built Style I have yet to talk about ties.
And that’s not on purpose.
I really just haven’t gotten around to it.
And while I don’t want to turn this article into an in depth discussion on ties (I’ll save that for another time, I promise!), what I do want to do is at least share with you a tie that I think every guy should have for the winter season:
Frankly speaking, there are two reasons why you should consider adding a wool tie to your rotation for the winter season:
- They’re seasonally appropriate
- Hardly any guys ever wear them
As I’ve said before, one of the key components to having good style is dressing appropriately for the occasion. This applies to specific events (e.g. weddings, funerals, dates etc.) as much as it does to the different seasons.
It’s the reason why you don’t want to be walking around in a pair of shorts in the middle of winter. Not only will you look silly, but you’ll freeze your ass off while doing so.
In this case, wool ties are similar to a pair of shorts in the sense that they are only meant to be worn during a specific season of the year (i.e. the fall and winter months).
And that’s why I like them so much.
They are a subtle yet stylish way for you to acknowledge a shift in the seasons and a change in the temperature. They are also a great way for you to separate yourself from other men.
Which brings me to my second point:
I think it’s safe to say that most guys who are interested in improving their style want to do so in an original way. Sure, they want to look good and everything, but they don’t want that to come at the expense of looking like every other guy out there.
Nobody wants that.
Fortunately, one way you can maintain (or enhance) your sense of unique style is by simply wearing items that most other men are not willing to wear.
Or, in this case, wool ties.
And that’s other reason it makes them such a great choice for the winter season: hardly any guys ever wear them.
Case in point: even though we’re more than half way through the winter season I have yet to see even one guy wear a wool tie in my office!
But then again, it probably shouldn’t come as a huge surprise since most of the guys that I work with dress like your typical office drone.
That’s why you’ll have a huge leg up on most guys by wearing a wool tie in the winter.
What can you pair with a wool tie?
It’s really not that complicated at all. Wool ties can be worn like any other tie, provided that you choose the right colour for your complexion and the correct pattern to complement the rest of your outfit.
Personally, I’ve gotten a great mileage out of a solid charcoal grey wool tie. It works with my complexion (medium to high contrast) and it can be paired easily with most of my shirts, sweaters, and jackets.
The winter season is still my favourite time of year for men’s style. It’s a chance for you to wear things like great sweaters, cool jackets, and awesome boots – seasonally appropriate items that not only keep you warm, but make you look stylish too.
And that’s why I love wool ties. They are perfect for the winter season and will definitely get you noticed in a good way.
So if you don’t already own a wool tie yet, then I recommend you buy one. Seriously, you won’t regret the decision.
Here’s to looking sharp!
