A big problem for guys who lift weights is finding trousers that fit.
It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for denim jeans, dress pants, or khakis, if you’re no stranger to your gym’s squat rack then you’ll find it difficult to find trousers that fit you comfortably through the seat and thighs.
Not too long ago I discovered a gem with the Gap’s Authentic 1969 Broken Twill Straight Fit Jeans. These are among the most comfortable jeans I have ever worn. My only issue with them, however, is that they only come in a limited range of colours, most of which do not flatter my skin tone. Navy is easily their best option, with soft black being a close second. The remaining colours (khaki, light grey, and green) just don’t work well for guys like me with a high contrast complexion.
Another great option I have come across recently are Olympvs Athletic Fit Jeans. For those of you looking for a more traditional looking (and feeling) pair of denim jeans Olympvs makes an incredible pair that are cut specifically for guys with larger thighs and smaller waists. I was very impressed with the quality of their jeans and they have quickly become my go-to pair.
Believe it or not but it’s the inclusion of a tiny percentage of spandex in order to give them a bit of stretch. And we’re not talking about a lot here, usually just around 1-3%. This is just enough spandex to give the jeans some added stretch so that they are comfortable to move around in but not so much that they fit like a pair of your girlfriend’s Lululemon leggings.
In fact, stretch denim has become quite popular these days and you’ll find many other companies making similar products.
After my positive experience with stretch denim I started hunting for other styles of stretch trousers like chinos, khakis, and cords. I figured if stretch denim worked out so well for me that other styles of stretch trousers would give me similar results.
And boy was I right.
Recently, I purchased a pair of J.Crew Stretch Chinos in 770 Fit and have been absolutely loving them. They are easily the most comfortable and the best fitting pair of chinos I have ever purchased. I have literally never had a pair of chinos or khakis fit this well and feel so comfortable straight off the rack.
The pair you see above are size 32×32. According to J.Crew’s website the thigh on the 770 Stretch Chinos measures 25″ while the leg opening is 14 3/4″. My current waist is 31″ while my thighs are pretty close to 25″. I’m 6’0″ and weigh about 185lbs.
The chinos are a bit loose through the waist but it’s not anything a belt can’t handle. I didn’t want to size down to the 31×32 as I needed the extra room in the seat of 32×32. As you can see from the images above the chinos fit pretty slim through the thigh but I can assure you that because of the added spandex (just 1%) they feel incredibly comfortable. I definitely don’t feel like I’m going to be bursting a seam. I can easily squat, sit, and move around in them as if I were wearing a pair of joggers.
The other thing I like about these chinos is that the leg opening is cut a bit more narrower than most other chinos. This gives them a nice clean look over my boots. If there’s one thing I hate it’s having a bunch of extra fabric pooling around my ankles.
Also, the colours these chinos are available in are all great. I’ve purchased a pair in coal grey (the ones you see pictured above) and a pair in catskill green. The other colours available are rusty aubergine (purple), navy, and river brown. All fantastic options that will work well for a range of different complexions.
In terms of price these retail for $75 but if you wait for a sale you can probably get them for around $50 which is a great deal.
Finding trousers that fit guys with muscular legs is hard. One strategy is to look for trousers that are made with a small amount of spandex for added stretch. This makes the trousers a lot more comfortable to wear and move around even if you are a quadzilla.
The J.Crew Stretch Chinos in 770 Fit are a hot seller right now and for good reason. They are incredibly comfortable and the cut is extremely flattering on most guys. They also come in a variety of fall approved colours. If you’re in the market right now for a quality pair of chinos I highly recommend you give them a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
Here’s to looking sharp!
