One of the most common questions I get asked by readers is which company makes good button up shirts.
There are a lot of companies out there making button up shirts these days. Some good, some not so good. However, there is one company that has consistently caught my attention for making great shirts: Batch.
In fact, I’d say Batch is easily one of the best companies out there making button up shirts right now. I have yet to see anyone beat them on price AND quality.
What makes Batch shirts so great?
It’s the care and detail they put into their shirts. Their craftsmanship is top notch. Batch is not mass producing shirts in some shady third world factory where workers get paid peanuts to pump out “units” by the thousands. Instead, Batch builds their shirts one at a time in small…batches (pun intended).
One of the first things you’ll notice about a Batch shirt is its feel. The fabric has a nice medium weight to it and its incredibly soft (likely due to the mercerized cotton). I’ve noticed with a lot of cheaper shirts that the fabric tends to be thin and it feels coarse/rough against your skin. Not with Batch. Their shirts are so plush that you won’t need to wear an undershirt with them.
The next thing you’ll notice about a Batch shirt is its construction. When you put on a Batch shirt and move around in it you don’t feel like you’re about to burst a seam. Batch shirts have an incredible sturdiness to them that is a testament to their quality. No wonder Batch offers a 60 day return policy. Their shirts won’t be blowing out on you after only a few wears.
Okay, so Batch shirts sound great and everything but how do they actually fit?
Here’s yours truly wearing their Iconic Dot – Rare Burgundy Business Casual shirt:
As you can see the shirt fits incredibly well. Hard to believe that this an off the rack shirt. It really does look like a tailored shirt. The sleeves are slim but not too slim and the shirt fits beautifully through the chest and shoulders. It also tapers nicely through the midsection. No puffy shirt syndrome here.
For reference, I’m 6’0″ and weigh about 180-185lbs. Chest size is 42″ and waist size is 32″ (10 inch drop). Finding a shirt that fits this well for an athletic build is a challenge but Batch has definitely done their homework.
The other thing I like about this shirt is the collar size which is generous. I abhor puny collars. I want collars that stand up tall and proud and Batch has certainly delivered.
Oh, and did I mention Batch shirts use mother of pearl buttons? Yeah, that’s pretty damn cool. Once again, it’s a testament to the
As for the pattern and color of this shirt, it’s fantastic. The burgundy is rich, deep and vibrant and the dot pattern is classy as hell. This is a type of shirt that works equally as well at the office or a night out on the town.
When everyone is wearing their drab blue oxford shirts and baggy khakis around the office looking like your typical office drone, you can wear something like this Iconic Dot – Rare Burgundy shirt instead to really elevate your style and stand out in a good way.
Side note: with a patterned shirt like this my recommendation is to pair it with more neutral solids (like my charcoal grey suit). Let the shirt stand out on its own. You can also layer a shirt like this with solids (think v-neck or crew new jumper) as it adds a bit of contrast and visual interest to your outfit.
In terms of pricing, the Iconic Dot – Rare Burgundy shirt retails for $78 USD. This is an absolute steal as far as I’m concerned.
But what if you’re just not into prints. Maybe you’re more of a solid shirt guy. Does Batch make an equally great shirt in a stand out solid colour?
The shirt I’m wearing below is their Essential Shirt in Royal Blue:
As you can see, it’s another great fit.
What makes this particular shirt different from the Iconic Dot – Rare Burgundy shirt is that it’s made using a twill weave. This makes the shirt more resistant to wrinkling. The shirt is also treated with a non formaldehyde solution for the same purpose. Good news for those of us who care about our health and our exposure to industrial chemicals.
The other great thing about this shirt is that it’s cut to be worn tucked or untucked at your discretion.
For example, you can wear it untucked with a pair of dark denim jeans and boots for a more casually styling or throw it on with a grey suit and a pair of leather lace ups for a more polished look. The choice is yours.
Good button up shirts are hard to find these days. A lot of fast fashion retailers pump out sub quality shirts that neither fit too well nor last too long. Although these shirts may be easy on your wallet (in the short term) they are certainly not helping your style.
Batch is doing something different. By slowing down the process and putting the right care and attention to detail into their products they are changing our expectations. Once you wear a Batch shirt you will not want to go back to anything cheap or mass produced. I think this is a great thing.
So if you’re in the market for a quality button up shirt that is reasonable priced, I highly recommend you check out Batch. You will not be disappointed.
Here’s to looking sharp!
