A common issue for guys who lift is finding a pair of jeans that are comfortable and fit well.
Simply put, most denim is not cut to accommodate the proportions of a muscular man. We either find a pair that fit well around our waist only to be excruciatingly tight through the thighs, or we size up in order to accommodate our beefy legs only to have them practically falling off our waist.
What’s the solution?
A tailor can certainly help. It’s what I used to do. I’d go buy a pair that fit my muscular thighs and then have a good tailor take in the waist and taper the leg opening.
But this added cost is something that many men don’t find too palatable. They just want to be able to buy a pair of jeans and be done with it. They don’t want to have to deal with any “hidden costs.”
Is there another solution?
It’s called stretch denim.
What the hell is stretch denim?
It’s basically regular denim made with a small amount of elastane for added comfort. If you look at the label for a regular pair of jeans they will most likely be made from 100% cotton. Stretch denim, on the other hand, is usually 97-99% cotton and 1-3% elastane or spandex.
This small amount of elastane makes the jeans much more comfortable to wear as they have a little more “give” in them. When wearing stretch denim you won’t feel like you’re going to burst a seam when you squat down to pick something up.
But not all stretch denim is created equal. Some companies are doing a better job than others.
Since that time Olympvs has gone back to the lab in order to improve their already great product even more. They have updated the fit of their jeans and have even introduced a couple of new washes.
The changes they have made to the fit and design are more like subtle tweaks than a major overhaul. Here’s a summary of what they have done:
1 – Lengthened the rise
The rise is basically the measurement of the crotch seam. Here’s what I mean:
By lengthening the rise of their jeans Olympvs has done two things: first, they have made their jeans much more agreeable to a tucked in button up shirt. The problem with low rise jeans is that anything you tuck into them wants to come out as soon as you move around a little. Second, the longer rise gives you extra space for your crotch. This enhances comfort as the jeans will not ride up on you at all.
2 – Improved fit around the knee
The previous version had a little bit of extra space around the knee but nothing that I considered to be problematic. Nevertheless, Olympvs decided to clean up the fit in this area anyway. The result is more streamlined look and a pair of jeans that flatter the line of your legs.
3 – Subtle stitching
Again, I didn’t mind the stitching on the previous version but Olympvs decided to incorporate a more neutral or “classic” stitching on their new jeans. For the denim purists out there this is a great move.
4 – Deeper coin pocket
The coin pocket on the original jeans was a bit small. Enough to hold a few coins but that’s about it. Olympvs has increased the size of the coin pocket on the new jeans making it perfect for a slim wallet or a set of car keys.
5 – New washes
Olympvs has introduced two new washes (a dark wash and a medium wash) to go along with their original indigo wash. I love these new washes. As much as I am a fan of dark denim it’s nice to have the option of a lighter wash which are much more fun to wear during the warmer spring and summer months.
6 – Price
The new jeans are £10 cheaper than the previous version (£89 vs £79) making an already affordable pair of denim jeans that much more forgiving on your wallet.
One thing to note: the new jeans have all been shifted up a size in the waist from the previous version. For example, if you wear a 32×32 then the previous version’s 32×32 would be a solid fit. In the new version you would want to order a 34×32 pair.
Now that you know about the updates I’m sure you’re wondering how they actually fit.
These are a pair of their medium wash in 34×32. My natural waist is 32″ and my thighs measure around 25″ at the thickest point. I’m about 6’0″ and weigh 180lbs. These fit bang on around my midsection and the fit through the seat and thigh is money while the length is perfect.
In terms of comfort I have to admit these are the most comfortable pair of jeans I own (just like their previous version). I have another pair of “stretch denim” from J.Crew but they are no where near as comfortable as these. The Hyperstretch fabric is a real game changer here. The other great thing about these is that they look and feel just like denim.
I believe the medium wash looks best when worn more casually during the warmer months of the year. In this look I’ve paired them with a nice short sleeve button up shirt and some casual sneakers. A simple and straightforward casual look for the summer season.
Olympvs is easily making the best athletic fit denim on the market right now. With the subtle tweaks they have made to their fit and design they have taken an already great product and have made it even better.
For guys looking a quality pair of athletic denim that won’t break the bank, I highly recommend checking out Olympvs.
Here’s to looking sharp!
