A lot of guys are under the impression that sweaters are only appropriate during the fall/winter season.
Depending on where you live sweaters can be worn year round. You just have to make sure you choose the right type of sweater.
Spring being a transitional season means that the weather can often be all over the place. Warm and sunny one day, cool and rainy the next.
This makes a lightweight sweater a worthy wardrobe item for the spring season. It’ll keep you warm when the temperature dips but it won’t be too stifling either if the mercury rises.
And that’s the key to a good spring sweater: it needs to be lightweight. That means sweaters made out of linen, merino wool, lightweight cashmere or cashmere/cotton blends.
If you need some ideas/examples, check out my 5 favourite picks below.
Cotton Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater
One of the issues I have with 100% cotton sweaters is that they tend to lose their shape over time. The issue I have with cashmere sweaters is that they are not machine washable.
The good news about J.Crew’s Cotton Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater is that it won’t lose its shape over time and it’s machine washable.
That’s a huge win.
Although the sweater is mostly cotton (95%) the tiny addition of cashmere (5%) gives it a better shape and allows the sweater to wear well over time. It’s also very lightweight and comfortable enough (i.e. non scratchy) to wear on its own or over a v-neck undershirt.
The Cotton Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater comes in all of the basic colours (navy, light grey, charcoal etc.).
Lightweight Merino V-Neck Sweater
This is a beautiful v-neck sweater from the American menswear company Brooks Brothers. The depth of the v on this sweater is perfect too. Neither too shallow nor too deep. Perfect for throwing over top of your favourite spring button up shirt.
Heck, it’s so comfortable you could just as easily wear it on its own as well.
This sweater will go with pretty much everything in your wardrobe: denim jeans, shorts, khakis, you name it.
The Lightweight Merino V-Neck Sweater comes in a variety of colours with my two favourites being the light grey and denim heather. In fact, the denim heather v-neck paired with some dark denim jeans and desert boots would be a killer look in the spring:
French Linen Cardigan Sweater
This is easily the most lightweight sweater out of the bunch. In fact, it’s so lightweight that it almost has a sheer quality to it.
What I like about cardigans is that they look great with button up shirts and wingtips, making them the ideal for “dressing up.”
The one drawback with this sweater, however, is that you have to handwash it. Not a big factor for some (including me) but for others it might be a deal breaker.
The French Linen Cardigan Sweater comes in just the standard navy colour.
Performance Linen Sweater Hoodie
I’m not a huge fan of hoodies but I’ve started to come around. Slowly.
This particular hoodie is not like your typical athletic hoodie you wear to the gym.
The Performance Linen Sweater Hoodie by Banana Republic has a bit of stretch (due to the added nylon) and is very soft. It’s also machine washable which is a bonus.
I’d recommend wearing this with some lightweight joggers and your favourite pair of sneakers to round out the whole urban active look.
You could also wear this sweater with some denim jeans or khakis but I recommend sticking with the sneakers to maintain that sporty vibe. Although this is a nicer hoodie than what you would wear to the gym it’s still not something I’d want to try to “dress up.”
Racking Stripe Linen Sweater
If you’re interested in something with a bit more personality for the spring/summer months I recommend the Racking Stripe Linen Sweater by Club Monaco.
It’s a basic linen sweater but the racking stripe design gives it a bit more visual interest than your run-of-the-mill solid sweater. The indigo colour is also one that would look quite flattering on most complexions.
The spring season doesn’t mean you have to give up wearing sweaters. Just remember to choose something that is lightweight and will pair well with the rest of your wardrobe.
Here’s to looking sharp!
