1. You don’t lift
The biggest improvement you can make to your style is getting into great shape.
When your physique has zero dimension clothes have a tendency to hang off you.
It doesn’t matter how well you dress, when you’re frame is not carrying enough muscle nothing will look as good on you.
Guys who are muscular have it easy when it comes to style. Almost anything they wear looks great, especially casual basics.
Hit the gym, put on some muscle, drop the body fat, and watch your style improve dramatically.
2. Your clothes don’t fit
Fit is king. If your clothes don’t fit you well it doesn’t matter how muscular you are they will not look good!
Same goes for clothing that is too baggy. It will throw off your proportions and make you look sloppy.
You absolutely must dial in the fit of your clothes if you want to take your style the next level.
3. Your shoes suck
Shoes are one of the first things a woman notices about a man. What is your choice in footwear telling the world about you?
4. You don’t know how to dress with color
A key principle of stellar style is having your clothing draw attention to your face. One way to accomplish this is by using color effectively.
Unfortunately, most men have no idea how to dress according to their personal color contrast.
The principles are pretty easy to understand. Apply them and you will truly set your style a part from the average man.
5. You’re not intentional
You put very little thought in to what you wear on a day to day basis. Your style lacks cohesion and essentially amounts to little more than the path of least resistance.
This is a terrible strategy.
In order to develop a good sense of style you need to understand your personality and style archetype (among other things). If you’re utterly clueless about such things a good place to start is by reading Tanner Guzy’s book Appearance of Power.
This book will help understand style from the proverbial 30,000 foot perspective.
6. You want to blend in
Most guys are afraid to improve their style simply because they don’t want to draw any attention to themselves. They don’t want to make waves. They want to blend into the background.
And the last thing guys want to deal with is any blowback or criticism from family and friends for trying to improve their image.
Suck it up and improve your appearance anyways.
The benefits greatly outweigh the drawbacks and the little bit of discomfort you feel at the outset is a small price to pay to leveling up in life.
7. You lack discipline
Dressing well is skill like any other and it requires discipline to develop. You need to do it every day in order to make it become automatic.
In many ways improving your style is a lot like learning how to drive a car. The early stages will always be the hardest because they will require the most conscious effort on your part.
The good news is that if you practice the discipline of dressing well long enough it soon becomes second nature. Like a reflex. And that’s exactly what you want to be.
8. You think dressing up is dressing well
Having a good sense of style isn’t just about wearing a suite and tie.
You need disabuse yourself of this notion.
You can be just as stylish in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt as you can in a three piece suit. It all boils down to finding the right aesthetic for your personality and lifestyle.
That being said, even if you don’t need to wear a suit very often, you should still know how one should fit.
9. You think caring about style is “gay”
This is common pejorative leveled at men who care about their appearance and it’s entirely baseless.
Having a good sense of style is independent of your sexuality.
And men have cared about their appearance since the dawn of time.
That’s a 2000 year old Roman sandal pictured above, by the way.
Caring about your appearance is not just for women or gay men. It’s for everyone. Don’t let a silly belief like this hold you back from looking your best.
10. You think style doesn’t matter
Whether you like it or not what you look like matters. It’s the basis from which we draw our first impressions.
If you want to enjoy the benefit of the doubt in every way imaginable, be mindful of your appearance. Present the best package.
That’s the wonderful thing about style. You need not be born attractive. Style (and fitness) can do a lot of the heavy lifting for us guys.
Life is hard. Make it easier on yourself by dressing well.
Improving your style takes time but not nearly as much as you think. You can make some big gains just by addressing a handful of the issues discussed in this list (especially the first two).
Life’s too short to not look your best. Make the decision today to improve the way you look.
Here’s to looking sharp!
